TAQIYA

 

TAQIYA, dissimulation (lit., guarding, wariness); the practice, commonly regarded as distinctively Shiʿite, of hiding beliefs or rituals in times of imminent harm to one, his/her property, or reputation.  It may also refer to a variety of passive or active discreet types of behavior.  (Louis Medoff)
