GOL-E ZARD

GOL-E ZARD, literary, socio-satirical newspaper, published from 27 Šaʿbān 1336/7 June 1918 until 19 Ḏu’l-qaʿda 1342/ 22 June 1924, first every ten days, then biweekly, and, from the third year, weekly. It was suspended on two occasions, once for seventeen days and again for forty days, without the reason being made clear. Gol-e zard was published by Yaḥyā Samiʿiān “Rayḥān” with the support of Majmaʿ (Anjoman)-e adabi-e dāneškada, led by Moḥammad-Taqi Bahār (q.v.; Āryanpur, pp. 226). Its editors were first Ḥosayn Tawfiq and later Ebrāhim Olfat. Contributors to the paper were Bahār, Ḥosayn ʿAẓimzāda Oskuʾi, Saʿid Nafisi, ʿAbd-al-Ḥosayn Ḥesābi, Abu’l-Qāsem Ḏarra, Adib Bayżāʾi Kāšāni, and Neẓām Wafā, all members of Majmaʿ-e adabi-e dāneškada. This newspaper followed the style of its contemporary Nasim-e šemāl (Āryanpur, p. 226), which it admired (no. 1, “Editorial”). Although it considered itself a magazine, its format was four two-column typeset pages, measuring 22 x 35 cm. It rarely carried illustrations. It was printed in the Tehrān, Tamaddon, Rowšanāʾi, Kalimiān, and again Tehrān printing houses. The first three issues each cost seven šāhis in Tehran and eight šāhis in the provinces; thereafter, single issues were priced at six šāhis everywhere. Annual subscription cost twenty qerāns in Persia and from the third year thirty qerāns, with discounts for young people and low-income groups. Collections of Gol-e zard are available at the Central Library of Tehran University, Ketāb-ḵāna-ye ʿAllāma Ṭabāṭabāʾi (former Asia Institute) in Shiraz, Central Library of Fārs, National Library in Rašt, and Majles-e Šurā-ye Eslāmi Library, II, Tehran.
