FĪRŪZ MAŠREQĪ

FĪRŪZ (or Pīrūz) MAŠREQĪ (not Mošrefī as in Majmaʿ al-foṣaḥāʾ, p. 946), poet at the court of the Saffarids Yaʿqūb b. Layṯ (r. 253-65/867-78) and his brother ʿAmr b. Layṯ (r. 265-88/878-901). Next to nothing is known about his life. Hermann Ethé mentions (p. 218) him with the epithet ḥakīm (philosopher, sage) without indicating his source. Moḥammad ʿAwfī refers to him as a master poet who, like rain, cleansed the Persian language of impurities (besān-e ḡayṯ gaṯṯ o fasād az soḵan-e pārsī dūr kard; Lobāb II, p. 2).Fīrūz died in 283/896 (not in 282/895, pace Reżāzāda, p. 116). Only eleven couplets of his poetry have reached us.
