ESLĀMĪYA

ESLĀMĪYA, title of two Persian newspapers first appearing in Tabrīz in 1324/1906.

1. A royalist newspaper published in lithograph in a small format by Mīrzā Aḥmad Baṣīrat, the publisher of the Turkish newspaper Mollā ʿamū. There are no known extant copies.

2. A constitutionalist newspaper edited by the noted constitutionalist Mīrzā Abu’l-Qāsem Żīāʾ-al- ʿOlamāʾ, who was executed by the Russians during the occupation of the city in 1330/1912. Only one extant copy (no. 8) is known, published after a lapse on 29 Rabīʿ I 1325/13 May 1907. It lists the editor as Mīrzā Moḥammad Khan, possibly Mīrzā Moḥammad Abu’l-Żīāʾ Šabestarī, who later was editor of Mojāhed (Tabrīz) and Īrān-e now (Tehran). Its format was four, and from no. 8 eight onward, two-column pages, 21 x 35 cm, lithographed in nasḵ, carrying advertisements, but no illustrations. Subscription rates were 16 qerāns in Tabrīz and 12 French francs abroad.
